Interview with Jake Probelski

At first tell me something about this world of yours.
If you mean the ‘world’ I create with my paintings, I can’t say I put that much thought into each piece to consider it a world. I guess a better term would be a little piece of the pie where the rules are different than normal, and they change from day to day and place to place.

Why you chose the digital media.
Well it’s a lot more practical vs. other types of medium for casual work. It’s easier to pick up, too. Also there’s no smell of paint thinner to make you nauseous.

How about the ideas, you have something from the start or you develop it in time?
The majority of the ideas I come up with are developed over time while working on them. Unless I need something very specific I like to let an image evolve on its own, or else it can get very boring to work on.

Are these drawings more than just characters?
Well the ones based off of my girlfriend are. But otherwise most of them are not. Sometimes I’ll put little messages or personal meanings, or even sometimes personalities of people I know, into the more ambitious pieces, but for the most part I like to keep my personal life seperate from my paintings.

Do you ever think on changing something? Having a new direction or making something even more complex?
All the time. But it’s overwhelming to think about it constantly so I usually take it in smaller steps, hopefully improving over time.

How about the lines you like to use, is there a certain style to work with?

Well I prefer the appearance of the classic fantasy illustrations by Brom, Froud, etc. I try my best to emulate the masters without ripping them off in terms of style or visuals. I prefer my stuff to look semi-realistic but still retaining a fantasy/unrealistic appearance.

Which piece u like more and why?
Well after working on most of the complicated pieces, I usually never want to see them again. So I think my personal favourite is Moonlight Wishes because it’s simple and it embodies how I feel about the special person in my life.
